Where do you need to be at 7 p.m. on a December Saturday in Wilmington? On December 5, 12 and 19, 150 drones will fly over the Cape Fear River between Dock and Grace streets. The rest of downtown's Saturday calendar is arranged around those few minutes in the sky.
Santa's hours bracket the show. One December race finishes just in time for it. The city's Saturday parking rate covers a full evening at the river. Thanksgiving weekend is the one stretch where the calendar spreads out across town, and that weekend comes first.
Seven O'Clock Is Earlier Than Last Year
The Holidays on Water drone show is back on the Riverwalk, and it is free. The Wilmington and Beaches CVB event listing describes holiday scenes like snowflakes and gingerbread men in synchronized formations. It sets the start at 7:00 p.m. every Saturday, with the City of Wilmington presenting.
That start time is a change. When WECT covered last year's shows, the drones were scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Santa was booked for only two of the dates, and one show was later canceled because of weather. This year there are three dates, Santa is listed for all of them, and the show starts thirty minutes earlier. For families with young children, the earlier start makes a real difference to bedtime.
Santa will be near the Visitor Information Booth from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. each of the three Saturdays. That gives you two hours before the show for photos and one hour after it.
The Rest of the Saturday Builds Toward the Show
Two of the three Saturdays add a race to the evening routine, and the city's permitted-events list shows what else is booked for each date.
| Saturday | Earlier in the day | 5:00 p.m. on | 7:00 p.m. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec. 5 | Wilmington Historic Half, 10K and 5K from Riverfront Park, starting at 7:00 a.m. | Santa near the Visitor Information Booth | Drone show |
| Dec. 12 | AvanceCare Dashing Thru The Glow at Live Oak Pavilion, 1-mile at 5:05 p.m., 5K at 5:35 p.m. | Santa near the Visitor Information Booth | Drone show |
| Dec. 19 | Nothing else on the city's permit list | Santa near the Visitor Information Booth | Drone show |
On December 5, the race takes the morning and the river takes the evening. The Wilmington Historic Half sends the 5K off at 7:00 a.m., the 10K at 7:30 a.m. and the half marathon at 7:45 a.m., and everything wraps up by 11:30 a.m. The organizer says the half marathon and 10K courses cross three bridges and run through the historic district. If you aren't running, plan your morning drive around it.
On December 12, the race and the drones overlap on purpose. Dashing Thru The Glow is put on by Wilmington Downtown and It's Go Time. It's a run or walk through the downtown lights with cookies, hot chocolate and Santa, and the organizers tell participants to "stay for the Holidays on the Water Drone show." The 5K starts at 5:35 p.m., so most finishers will be back near the water before the drones go up.
December 19 has nothing else on the permit list. That makes it the simplest of the three nights: Santa at 5:00, dinner downtown, and the drones at 7:00.
The $5 Deck Rate Covers the Whole Evening
The detail that ties these Saturdays together is a parking notice on the city's website. From October 3 through December 26, 2026, the Market Street and 2nd Street decks cost $5 on Saturdays, and the first hour is still free. In the city's words, the rate is meant to help people "stay downtown awhile to visit restaurants, shops, the riverwalk, and more."
A single flat fee fits a Saturday that starts with Santa at 5:00 and ends after the drones. Park once, walk to the river, eat somewhere along Front Street, and the cost stays the same however long dinner runs. The rate ends December 26, a week after the last drone show, which keeps it in place through the last weekend of holiday shopping.
On Sundays the arrangement is different. The city notes that metered parking is free on Sunday, November 29, the night of the Holiday Parade.
Thanksgiving Weekend Has Events on Four Straight Days
The December Saturdays follow one routine. Thanksgiving weekend has a different event each day, and on Saturday downtown and the beach both have something going on. Here is how the days line up, based on the city's permit list, the Downtown Business Alliance calendar and the flotilla organizer.
- Thursday, Nov. 26. The Thanksgiving Turkey Trot runs downtown.
- Friday, Nov. 27. The Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting is on the Riverwalk at 2 Princess Street. The City and the Downtown Business Alliance both list Friday. The CVB's event page lists Saturday, November 28, with entertainment from 5:30 p.m. and a countdown at about 6:25 p.m., so check the date with the organizers before you go. The same evening, the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla holds its 5:30 p.m. captains' meeting and a ticketed 7:00 p.m. kickoff party hosted by Bluewater Grill, with live music from Spare Change.
- Saturday, Nov. 28. Downtown has Really Cool Stuff and District Day on the Business Alliance calendar, and the city's permit list also includes a Holiday Market on Dock for Small Business Saturday. At Wrightsville Beach, the flotilla's Day in the Park runs 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with arts and craft vendors, food and kids' activities. The boat parade starts at 6:00 p.m., with fireworks afterward.
- Sunday, Nov. 29. The city's 23rd annual Holiday Parade starts at 6:00 p.m. on Front Street between Walnut and Church streets. It's free. The flotilla holds its awards ceremony that morning at 10:00.
Saturday the 28th is the one day that takes planning. If you shop downtown during the day and want to see the boats at 6:00, you'll have to drive to the beach in between. On the other three days, everything is either downtown or on the water near Wrightsville.
Two Front Street–Area Addresses to Build Into the Evening
Two openings near the river give you somewhere new to wait for 7:00.
WilmingtonBiz reported that Pour Taproom at the Outpost, at 201 N. Front St. in the Murchison Building, was set to reopen October 28 under new ownership. Eight of its 71 taps are for nonalcoholic drinks, food service is returning, and the new owner plans to host 100 events a year. Self-pour taps and a nonalcoholic section suit a group that includes drivers, runners coming off the Dashing 5K, or anyone who would rather have hot chocolate.
A few blocks inland, Uji is getting ready at 101 N. Third St. WilmingtonBiz reported that the Japanese matcha café is aiming for a soft opening after Thanksgiving and a full opening in December. Plans include matcha drinks, Japanese-style sandwiches and onigiri, and reservation-only omakase dinners. If the timeline holds, Uji could open during the same weeks as the drone shows. Check before you go, because opening targets can move.
The Nights That Aren't Saturday
The Riverwalk is busiest on Saturdays, but the holiday lights run all month. Enchanted Airlie is open November 27 and 28, then December 1 through 21. Tickets are sold per vehicle: $35 for a carload, $65 for an XL van, and $85 or $125 for nonprofit or for-profit groups, plus tax and service fees. Public sales opened October 28 at 9 a.m., after member presales earlier that month. Since Airlie runs on weeknights and the drones fly only on Saturdays, you can see both without either one taking over a weekend.
For daytime plans, New Hanover County opened Smith Creek Park's Phase 2 expansion on August 4. It added 85 acres and a one-mile paved perimeter trail with an ADA-accessible connection, along with a restroom, a picnic shelter and nature-play features. The new entrance is at 251 Lake Emerald Drive East, and the park is open dawn to dusk.
If you're working out holiday weekends around a move, guests in town, or a home near the river, Sheena Shaw and The Hometown Team can help you figure out how a Wilmington address fits your calendar. Schedule a Consultation, and we'll talk through it before the first drone goes up on December 5.
